1971 Volkswagen 411
So what was wrong with the Type 4 – sold as the 411 in 1971 and 1972 and the 412 in 1973 and 1974 – to be exact? Quite frankly, not a lot. I asked the owner for the 411 on his 411, a 1971 model, at the Terryville show in Connecticut in 2006, and he said it was a solid performer, was great in snow, and had a numerous amount of comfort features. Perhaps it was the last point that helped make the 4 an orphan in America. People looking for a large car found VW’s idea of a big sedan not big enough, and traditional VW buyers didn’t think it was economical enough. (At $3000 in ’71, the Type 4 sedan – the first Volkswagen with rear passenger doors – didn’t come cheap!)
This Volkswagen Type 4 sedan is a 1971, sporting a rather commanding presence. As noted, it was not very successful in North America, but some examples still exist. This is not the same one I saw in Connecticut, so there are clearly more of them than I thought!
I dropped the photo of the one in Connecticut; the wheel was cut off.
